about

To celebrate 10 years since the release of my debut album, Mshin Wam, and finally free of the god awful deal that I ignorantly signed to release it, I am rereleasing Mshini Wam in a "deluxe package" complete with a slew of remixes from Batida (DJ Mpula), DJ Rashad (RIP), Giovanni Marks (Subtitle), BBQ and many more.

The title of his album “Mshini Wam” is taken from a famous South African song with lyrics in Zulu called “Umshini Wami”, what means “My Machine” in English. It is popular amongst members of the military wing of the ANC – in their version it means bring me my machine gun.
Spoek Mathambo wants to give it a new connotation: for him “Mshini Wam” means “My Machine… a way to express a new wave of electronic African music”.

Control – a "darkwave township house" cover of the Joy Division classic She's Lost Control – is the fourth single to be taken from South African producer/DJ Spoek Mathambo's latest album, Mshini Wam. With an eerily distorted vocal and one of those "wamp wamp" basslines, Control maintains the original's ability to make you want to dance while fully aware that the song itself is best accompanied by a dark depression. The incredible video – premiered on Dazed Digital – was shot in Langa, Cape Town and is directed by respected photographer Pieter Hugo, who used a cast made up mainly of kids from the local dance troupe, Happy Feet.
