Bhekisenzo Cele aka Vukazithathe is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer with a powerful energy and a great knack for improvisation. He is a veteran of the underground maskandi music scene of South Africa.
Raised in Dweshula on the south coast of Kwa Zulu Natal by both a mother and father who played guitar, Maskandi music runs in his blood. A practitioner of maskandi music (modern-day Zulu folk), Vukazithathe
plays bass guitar, guitar, concertina, and improvises on violin and harmonica.

Vukazithathe has suffered many personal hardships that have hindered his progress in his music, but this has never stopped him from pouring his artistry into composing and recording albums. A great feat was reached
in 2012 when he wrote and recorded, Anibakhuzeni, an album where he plays all the instruments and sings, a true illustration of his vision and genius.

Vukazithathe’s music, like most maskandi music, is a reflection of the world around him; the people he sees and the experiences he has lived. And it is a healthy outlet through which one can process one’s own feelings.

But there is more to it: “if someone is doing something bad in the community,” he says in an interview, “I am able to sing about that. I can’t just confront them and accuse them.” And he illustrates this as he performs his song, Umbulali. The song is a confrontation of, a conversation with, the people who sought to harm his life – them who killed his mother and his son in Dweshula in 1999. With an inexplicable amount of grace, Vukazithathe sings about the people who brought this pain into his life, and how he wants them to forgive him for whatever it is that led them to it.

Perhaps this grace draws itself from the strength of his belief in a higher power. He remains grateful to God, who has carried him through his life. Vukazithathe has found refuge in Nazareth Baptist Church, okwaShembe – a fitting home for a man who reveres Christ but is also rooted in his identity as a Zulu man. Before Vukazithathe, before Shembe, there was Thambolencuba (Bone of The Carcass). Starting anew after he found miracles in Shembe, and after resolving to work towards the change he wanted in life, Vukazithathe was born. “Vukazithathe” means “get up and take control,” and the name has come to be a prophecy for his new life, a new hope. With this documentary, and him finally having released his debut album, Anibakhuzeni, this brilliant black hidden gem of an artist can have access to a wider audience that can help nurture his
artistic gifts, avuke azithathe.

After years of circulating the underground maskandi music scene, the Anibakhuzeni album is now available to music fans around the world, on long time collaborator and friend Spoek Mathambo’s label, Teka Music
(home to acts such as Spoek Mathambo, Batuk and Laliboi). The uncanny union, between the alternative hip-hop musician Spoek Mathambo and Vukazithathe, the underground maskandi musician, is a testament to
the vastness of the artistic curiosity of both artists.

Anibakhuzeni, is available for streaming and purchase on all available music platforms. He has also started crowdfunding for his next album, which you can support on
