South African electronic music duo, BATUK, return with a powerful new 8 track project, 'Again She Reigns' to be released in late October (on their label Teka Music). This is an epic celebration of legendary women in African history, exploring the right to write (or rewrite) history. Manteiga passionately sings praises in Portuguese and English, not just to royalty of days past, but to women across the world, right now!

Accompanied by Spoek Mathambo's dazzling display of synth, percussion and drumwork, Manteiga takes us on a mesmerising trip through time and space. Even when dealing with heavy subject matter, Batuk finds the groove as a unifying way to commemorate tragedy through music that depicts women as resilient, beautiful, vulnerable and complex.

Again She Reigns is a musical series that is also accompanied by eight paintings, each named after the women in the paintings (the paintings have been shown in Cape Town and Luxembourg). The songs, performed and written by Manteiga, composed by Spoek Mathambo, are years ahead of the eras the women in the paintings come from. This brings us to a future where these women are celebrated and meditated upon through futuristic, afro house beats.

On 'Fezekile Khuzwayo', Batuk takes on an atmospheric, highly rhythmic yet chilled approach to unravel one of South Africa's biggest stories.

On 'Perpetua & Felicity', Manteiga questions, “Who deals the justice?" — words challenging the world's centres of power. "Makeda", a summer-sweet ode to the queen of Sheeba, is already burning up radio and dancefloors having been released last month.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
